Is it safe to rent a house in Elqui Valley for my husband and 2 kids? I want to go there to see the Eclipse in 2019. I've checked out all the eclipse tour group excursions, but they are incredibly overpriced ($5,000-$7,000) per person! All the hotels are sold out or not available. I want to go there without a tour group. Is it safe? Never been to Chile. Thanks!

Yes, it is. I have just been there, also for the first time. I went alone and I am thinking now to come back with the family. The place is super safe and the atmosphere relaxed in general. The view of the sky at night is as good as you can get. A house (a hut probably) is surely a good option. There are many options. I stayed at Los Sauzales.
