Toxic smoke and dangerous particulate pollution are spreading far beyond the flames, leaving air quality at unhealthy levels in multiple counties.

The Hollywood Sign is once again visible from the Bluff as the haze from the fires clear and the winds carry the smoke past campus. As firefighters continue to work to contain the remaining fires and students begin to feel safer, more appear to stop taking precautions and masking up outside.

The Air Quality Index measured 156 near Forks, Washington, and received a rating of "unhealthy," meaning some members of the general public may experience health effects and members of sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects. No major wildfires were reported nearby, however.

The Hughes Fire caused concern among residents as the blaze spread in Southern California. At least 31,000 residents were ordered to evacuate as the fire grew to over 10,000 acres on Wednesday, January 22.
