On Tuesday, the Mercury traded for the All-Star and Olympic Gold Medalist, according to Alexa Philippou of ESPN. Thomas was an unrestricted free agent, but the Connecticut Sun “cored” her, giving her a one-year extension.

Alyssa Thomas was always reliable for the Sun, but their Tuesday trade with the Mercury proves that the business is unpredictable.

Thomas was designated as the team’s franchise player earlier this month, meaning the only way she could sign with another team was via trade. The move can't become official until Feb. 1.
