Derek Carr ran out of gas. Carr, 34, announced Saturday that he is retiring from the NFL rather than undergoing shoulder surgery —to repair a labral tear and damage to his rotator cuff — that likely would have ruled him out for the season.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr is set to retire after dealing with a shoulder injury, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo reported on Saturday, per sources. Carr later announced his retirement from the NFL.

Saints head coach Kellen Moore said the starting QB job will be an open competition between rookie Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener.
