More than 72 million Americans are expected to travel for the Fourth of July holiday. Some may be in for a rainy trip.

The hottest spots should include portions of the Midwest, South and Southwest. Readings top out in the 90s and 100s in those locations.

More showers and thunderstorms move into New Mexico Thursday. We get a break from the monsoon starting the Fourth of July with hotter weather returning. It has again been raining on and off Wednesday in southeast New Mexico with a few breaks in the clouds this afternoon.

Once the front passes, drier conditions are on the horizon. Bryan Jackson, a meteorologist at the Weather Prediction Center, said “ideal conditions” were expected for July 4 in the Northeast. After a slight temperature dip from Wednesday through Friday, things will warm back up over the weekend.

Severe weather is expected to move through parts of Maryland late Tuesday morning into early afternoon.

Clusters of severe storms will begin to develop this afternoon across the mid-Atlantic and the Northeast out ahead of a slow-moving cold front. Storms will likely impact the evening commute along the Interstate 95 corridor from New York City to Philadelphia down to Baltimore and Washington,
