A federal judge on Friday delayed an order requiring Google to open up its Android app store to more competition until an appeals court decides whether to block the shake-up because of legal questions surrounding a jury’s verdict that branded Google as an illegal monopolist.

Google said on Friday that a federal judge in California granted its request to pause his order directing the Alphabet unit to overhaul its Android app store Play by Nov. 1 to give consumers more choice over how they download software.

Google has asked a U.S. appeals court to block a judge’s order requiring the Alphabet unit to redesign its app store Play, as the tech giant prepares for what could be a lengthy appeal in its antitrust battle with "Fortnite" maker Epic Games.

Google just netted a small but key victory in its Epic legal battle. Last week, the company asked Judge James Donato to press pause on his November 1st deadline to drastically alter its Android app store rules.

Google has requested more time to implement changes mandated by a judge's ruling in its trial involving Epic Games. The company says the rush to introduce third-party app stores into Google Play raises safety and privacy risks for 100+ million US Android users.
