Massive 6.0 earthquake rocks Alaska near military installation
The quake struck in the early hours of the morning just after 8:11 a.m. local time at a depth of 43 miles., according to the USGS
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - An earthquake jostled many residents in Southcentral Alaska on Thanksgiving morning. Measured at a preliminary magnitude 6.0, the quake struck at 8:11 a.m. about 26 miles west of Willow, according to the Alaska Earthquake Center, with a depth of 46.6 miles.
The National Tsunami Warning Center confirmed that “a tsunami is not expected following the quake”. Alaska’s Department of Transportation said roadways, tunnels and key transport infrastructure would be inspected as a precaution, consistent with established protocols following moderate seismic events.
There were no immediate reports of major damage, but the state transportation department said it would survey roads, bridges and other infrastructure.
A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck near Susitna, about 9 miles west of the community and roughly 30 miles from Anchorage.
