Since taking office in January, President Donald Trump has slashed government spending and dismantled entire federal agencies and programs, with billionaire Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency leading the charge.

During a remote appearance at a Morgan Stanley tech conference, he said the government should "privatize everything we possibly can."

Elon Musk said Wednesday that he wants to privatize the U.S. Postal Service and Amtrak, according to reports from multiple news outlets. And as the most powerful oligarch in the U.S.—a man who’s been given the chance to unilaterally dismantle whatever he likes under the guise of a pseudo-government agency called DOGE—the billionaire may get his wish soon.

The head of the Department of Government Efficiency suggested the move while speaking at a Morgan Stanley conference Wednesday.

Trump said he was considering merging the Postal Service with the U.S. Commerce Department, a move Democrats said would violate federal law.

Elon Musk recently told those gathered at the Morgan Stanley Technology Media & Telecom conference that anything that can be privatized should be privatized. Among the agencies Musk would like to see privatized are Amtrak and the U.S. Postal Service.

Elon Musk added Amtrak to the list of government-funded services on his chopping board, saying privatization was the only way to fix the federally owned railroad.

During a remote appearance at a technology conference in San Francisco, Musk told attendees the U.S. should privatize "as much as possible."
