Sweden is the newest NATO member and is already outpacing more than half its fellow member countries on defense spending.

NATO projects that all member countries will meet the 2% GDP defense spending target in 2025, while nearly all member countries agreed to a new 5% of GDP goal by 2035.

NATO has asked members for more money to finance a salary hike for staff, a request some alliance nations deem disproportionate given the COVID-19 hit to their economies and are refusing, three European diplomats said.

Although Portugal and Spain have recently reversed course on the F-35, the aircraft has been widely adopted across the NATO alliance.

Alliance nations are working to do more together to counter increasing Russian air threats—and downplaying the possibility of a U.S. force reduction in Europe.
