The NCAA Division II College Football Playoffs get underway today as the Central Washington Wildcats (10-1) take on the Western Colorado Mountaineers (9-2) in a first round showdown.

The Garnet Chargers finished 8-3 in coach Jon Drach's second season and won the Liberty League title with a 7-0 record in league play.

The trophy is a small-scale replica of the hundreds of large, pink, quartzite markers survey crews planted in the early 1890s to delineate North Dakota from South Dakota, one every half-mile for 360 miles. The two states were established in 1889 from the Dakota Territory.

Both football teams received invitations to play in the NCAA playoffs, Northwood in Division II and Alma in Division III. It is Northwood’s first playoff appearance since 2006, while Alma went 2-1 in the 2023 playoffs.

The No. 11 BYU Cougars and Cincinnati Bearcats meet Saturday at Nippert Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
