The Biden administration delayed until June an order for Nippon Steel to abandon its $14.9 billion bid for U.S. Steel , the companies said on Saturday, giving them some time to revive the politically contentious deal.

Local steelworkers are holding out hope that the U.S. Steel sale with Nippon Steel goes through. This week Cleveland Cliffs CEO Lourence Goncalves offered to buy the Steel giant. The offer comes after President Joe Biden blocked a deal between U.S. Steel and Nippon Steel, a decision that’s since been challenged in a lawsuit.

The suit, filed in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, alleges that it was a political decision and violated the companies’ due process.

President-elect Donald Trump has also expressed strong opposition to Japanese ownership of infrastructure giant.

The proposed deal kicked up an election year political maelstrom across America’s industrial heartland and quickly drew vows by Biden and Trump from the campaign trail in a critical battleground state to block the deal.
