The sentencing phase of the murder trial for Gerald Goines continued this morning with Goines recently released from the hospital.

Nearly two weeks after convicting former Houston police officer Gerald Goines of two counts of murder, jurors began deliberating his punishment Monday morning. They are deciding between a minimum of five years to a maximum of life in prison for each conviction.

Because Goines retired before HPD took action against him, he will likely retain eligibility for pension, officials say.

The jury was supposed to hear closing arguments before deciding the severity of Goines's sentence after he was convicted on two counts of felony murder in connection to the Harding Street raid.
