A student loan cancellation program for public workers has granted relief to more than 1 million Americans — up from just 7,000 who were approved before it was updated by the Biden administration two years ago.

The White House approved a new round of student debt relief on Thursday, totaling $4.5 billion for 60,000 public service borrowers.

Before Biden took office, just 7,000 borrowers had received forgiveness through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.

The Education Department wants the company to improve its management amid problems with billing and a backlog of repayment plan applications.
