A decade after the Flint, Michigan water crisis, the President has set a new target to ensure all U.S. drinking water is safe.

President Joe Biden took a major step toward eliminating the national scourge of lead pipes, unveiling a new rule mandating the removal of all lead pipes within the next decade, in addition to $2.6 billion in new funding toward the environmental and public health goal.

The Biden administration finalized a landmark rule on Tuesday that would require water utilities to replace virtually every lead pipe in the country within 10 years, tackling a major threat that is particularly dangerous to infants and children.

The American Water Works Association, an industry group, said consumers would pay for most of the project through higher water bills.

While in Wisconsin, President Biden announced his administration is investing an additional $2.6 billion for drinking water upgrades and lead pipe replacements.
