A polar vortex sun and below-zero wind chills marked the opening day for the Art Shanty Projects on Lake Harriet.

A Minneapolis wintertime staple is back once more – this time, with renewed hope. As the Ice Shanty Art Project enters its 21st year, it's coming off arguably it's toughest year – when Minnesota's warmest winter on record cut the project short after just a handful of days.

After two years of weather disruptions, bone-chilling temperatures are a welcomed sight for those organizing the art festival.

After last year’s event was cut short by March-like temperatures, organizers have been monitoring the forecast.

The Art Shanty Projects, featuring 20 uniquely designed shanties with performances and interactive experiences, returns Jan. 18–Feb. 9, showcasing a new mentorship program and celebrating ideal ice conditions after last year's weather challenges.

The event is scheduled every year in January and takes place on Lake Harriet. The times of the event are each Saturday and Sunday January 18th through February 9th from 10am to 4pm. It's fun, and it can be slippery. So, make sure you prepare yourself and dress appropriately for the conditions.
