A police department in Southern California says it has the nation’s first Tesla Cybertruck for police use, but the unusual vehicle won’t see much action. The Irvine Police Department unveiled the purchase Tuesday in a splashy video on social media including on Facebook and X.

The UP.FIT Cybertruck Next-Gen Patrol vehicle is specifically designed to meet the needs of first responders, equipped with a comprehensive suite of upgraded features that enhance police work in the field.

The Irvine Police Department rolled out its newly purchased Tesla Cybertruck, touted as the first of its kind to be used by a law enforcement agency.

Sure, Tesla's Cybertruck looks something a person using hallucinogens might imagine. But a police department in California is actually counting on it to keep kids off drugs — imagine that.

The truck won't be heading out to help patrol officers play action hero, however. Instead, the steel-bodied Tesla is planned to be used for the IPD's Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program as well as helping police to connect with the local community.

The Irvine Police Department stated on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter, that while their Cybertruck can respond to emergencies, it will not use the vehicle as a patrol car. Instead, the department will primarily use it for community outreach, including appearances at schools.
