Singer Liam Payne "jumped from the balcony" of his hotel room before his death at 31 on Oct. 16, local authorities told PEOPLE. Police had been called to the scene shortly after 5 p.m. local time and Payne was said to have died shortly afterward.

Liam Payne, who rose to fame as part of the British boy band One Direction, is dead at 31. Payne died outside a hotel in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires, local police confirmed Wednesday. Earlier Wednesday,
