The New Orleans Saints held a competition all summer to find out what they had in both of their backup quarterbacks. The Saints have played coy about who actually won the competition, listing Derek Carr's backup as Spencer Rattler or Jake Haener on the depth chart.

In each of the past two off-seasons, the New Orleans Saints used a mid-round draft pick to select a promising quarterback prospect to develop behind established starter Derek Carr.

Haener, who was drafted in the fourth round by the Saints in 2023, didn't play at all in 2023 after being suspended six games for violating the NFL's performance enhancing drug policy. He was the third string quarterback behind Carr and Jameis Winston.
