Consider that the amount giving deep color to your extracts might be minuscule, so no reason to expect iodine grains as residue. $\endgroup$

Jun 13, 2015 · Petroleum benzene ; I know that $\ce{HCl}$ has the largest polarity. Hexane I guess has the less. I guess the order should be like: $\ce{HCl}$ > Methanol > Petroleum benzene > Hexane. Is this correct? I'm not sure of the place of petroleum benzene.

We can start with the ether, in the below figure (from wikipedia the one at right ) is shown a diethylether molecule. You can see that is quite a non-polar molecule (charge 0,green, in the most part of the surface) so this explains why has a low solubility in a polar solvent like water.

Then the eluent was switched to a polar one with a smooth transition ensured by 1:1 ethyl acetate/petroleum ether. Note that besides retention considerations the switching must be performed gradually and not abruptly.

Aug 9, 2016 · $\begingroup$ I'm not sure this is the case, for the hydrocarbons distilling between various temperatures (in the UK at least) they'd be sold as 30-40/40-60/60-80 petroleum ether (Pet Ether). With hexanes vs n-hexane denoting whether the bottle was pure n-hexane or a mixture of C6 isomers. $\endgroup$
