Since opening in 1889 as part of John D. Rockefeller’s Standard Oil Company, the Whiting refinery has been a cornerstone of northwest Indiana’s economy. It is the largest refinery in the Midwest and bp’s largest in the world, producing around 10 million gallons of gasoline, 4 million gallons of diesel and 2 million gallons of jet fuel daily, as well as 7% of all US asphalt.
