Printing a larger cut deserves a larger brayer! In this video, Howard prints a copy of a cut. This cut is a reproduction of W.C. Butler’s letter sheet, “Commandments to California Wives.” This was originally published in 1855 and presented a satirical guide for women in California during the Gold Rush. The NBA season has started and we here at the Sacramento History Museum are, of course, #SacramentoProud. In honor of the start of the season, Howard letterpress printed something for the Sacramento Kings. This electrotype clearly shows its age because basketballs stopped having laces in the late 1930s. When it comes to letterpress printing, everything that one prints has to be .918 of an inch, also known as Type High. Because finding wood that fits that height requirement, sometimes woodcuts were recycled and a new engraving was made on the other side.
