A 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐢𝐠𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐮𝐦 (𝐑𝐏𝐄) is a pigmented cuboidal layer of epithelial cells between the choriocapillaris blood supply and photoreceptor outer segments of the retina. The pigment is melanin, granules of which absorb light and convert it to heat, which is then dissipated through the choriocapillaris. The basement membrane of the RPE cells forms the inner layer of Bruch’s membrane, which separates the RPE and outer retina from the choroidal circulation. Together
