Academy Award-nominated actress Patricia Clarkson stars in "Lilly," the story of Lilly Ledbetter, whose 1990s lawsuit demanding equal pay with her male colleagues went all the way to the Supreme Court. Correspondent Faith Salie talks with Clarkson about playing the real-life activist and how her own mother, Jackie Clarkson, a former Louisiana elected representative, inspired her performance. https://cbsn.ws/4jKo5aN | CBS Sunday Morning

The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was supposed to be the first step to close the wage gap—but now it’s been 10 years to the day since Congress passed any legislation to right this wrong. It’s past time to fix this. Women shouldn’t have to wait another decade to make what they earn. #Ledbetter10 | Kirsten Gillibrand

Lilly Ledbetter had worked as an area manager at a Goodyear plant in Alabama for 19 years when she received an anonymous note that revealed she earned 35%-40% less than men in her position. It devastated Ledbetter, in part because that withheld pay could have helped her support her family. “This affects everybody across the family, including men,” Ledbetter said. “When you talk about equal pay, it’s a family affair.” She filed a sex discrimination case against Goodyear that she won but then lost

Lilly Ledbetter fought for a simple principle: equal pay for equal work. After discovering she was paid less than her male colleagues for doing the same work, she became an advocate for fair wages. Her courage and dedication resulted in the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act—the very first bill I signed into law as President. While the fight for equal pay continues, Lilly’s life serves as a reminder that progress is possible when we make it happen. | Barack Obama

For nearly two decades, Lilly Ledbetter showed up for the nightshift as a supervisor at Goodyear Tire Plant in Gadsden, Alabama, until an anonymous note arrived that changed everything. She found out that she was paid 40% less than the male managers doing the exact same job. She sued, and won, in 2003, only to watch the Supreme Court overturn it in 2007 based on a technicality. Most people would have accepted defeat, but Lilly kept on fighting, launching a grassroots movement to make pay equity
