16-17 July 1942 | The Vel' d'Hiv Roundup At dawn on 16 July 1942, some 4,500 French policemen began a mass arrest of foreign Jews living in Paris, by order of the German authorities. Over 11,000 Jewish men, women, and children were arrested and confined in the Vel' d'Hiv Stadium. They were then sent to concentration camps nearby and eventually deported to Auschwitz, where they were murdered.
